But it is soon revealed that all they've been fighting for is a lie: SEELE, the secret parent corporation of NERV, wanted to eliminate the Angels so it would be free to carry out the Human Instrumentality Project, ushering in a new level of human existence. However, SEELE discovers that NERV Director Gendou Ikari has betrayed them, as he plans to initiate his own altered version of the Project for his own plans. SEELE engineers a massive leave-no-survivors assault on Tokyo-3 by the conventional Japanese army, as well as deploying the 9 new mass-production model Eva units. With NERV being overwhelmed, the pilots of their 2 remaining Eva units mentally in no condition to fight, 9 horrifying new Eva's bearing down on the base, and Gendou descending into the bowels of NERV HQ to attempt the bring about Third Impact with Rei, the future of humanity lies in 14 year old Shinji's hands. I loved the ending to the television series, even if was just a psychoanalysis of the main characters. But I find this ending is more satisfactory as we get to see exactly what the instrumentality project is and does. We also get to see great action and some mind bending sequences. This movie makes you think and question what humanity means to you. We also see the internal and external conflicts of the character get resolved (for the most part, it's still a long road ahead for Shinji). And for those who say this isn't a happy ending well it isn't for the most part, everyone dies. But if you listen to the ending dialogue from Shinji, Kaworu, and Rei it's saying that Shinji wants the world to remain as it is (in terms of people remaining separate entities because he misses his friends and that was one of Shinji's main struggles in the series, with dealing with other people. From Kaworu and Rei we hear that you have to find your own happiness in the world, and it doesn't just fall into your lap. And that is so true. So in a way it is a positive ending. I'll admit that this movie isn't for everyone but this is such a well done movie, and you should at least check it out, but not before you've watched the TV series. And if you watch the series and find you didn't like it, well then you know that this movie isn't for you. End of Eva is one of the most complex movies i have ever seen. It is even more complicated than that of FLCL and Serial Experiments Lain, both of which are symbolically heavy. It is a MUST to see the entire Evangelion series before watching this one, and i think that you should watch episode 24 right before you watch this one, as this is an alternate ending to the series. To put it into context, Shinji has just Killed Kaoru-kun and is really feeling horrible. Asuka's in the hospital and Rei just sacrificed her life to save the Shinji, but there are more Reis left. SEELE begins a massive Invasion of NERV, and this is much more bloody and violent than the entire series, in my opinion. There is so much emotion and symbolism in this movie, but its really hard to follow. Will Shinji save the world? Does he accept the Instrumentality of Man that his Father is trying to create? This movie answers some questions, but Opens up endless more questions, and the title "End" of Evangelion is really a misnomer, cause the conclusion is very hard to decipher. But still, this is one of the greatest anime movies ever made, and I cannot fault it for its originality and daring to be different. This movie and the series that precedes it are one the finest examples of human character and drama to ever be procured. Hideaki Anno deserves the highest of accolades for his creation of this series, and his fight against the conventions of anime. 10/10
